Hi ! First , you will have to clean it . It doesn't matter if it's stained , but all the dirt , grime , grease and dust need to be cleaned off . You can use a mix of hot water , white vinegar and a few drops of dawn dishwashing . , or you can buy a good cleaner like Krud Kutter , you can find it at home depot , $6 .
We used a peel and stick vinyl planks , that look like real wood with texture !
They were pretty inexpensive , I paid between $11 - $17 , a box , each box covers 15 square feet. ( the price changed , I bought it from Amazon )
It was easy , cuts with carpet cutter or kitchen scissors , no glue needed !
we tried it in the laundry room first , liked it so much , we used it in both bathrooms , the entryway & kitchen !
Strip it and abraid it, fill holes with a binding floor leveler. Clean it again.
Then apply the new linoleum or carpet with the proper glue.
This part I would hire a pro, who should charge about $5 a square yard, if you’ve done the prep work properly & they don’t have to do it.
Mary,. Try peel n stick tiles. As long as it only dirty, clean it before you tile. Their are 20 tiles to a box, their 12x12. Make sure all those have the same lot number on each box. Measure the floor, and take it to Home Depot, and they'll tell you how many boxes you'll need. Buy one extra box for future repairs. Aloha!
We had a new vinyl floor laid by a professional many years ago. He said his vacuum cleaner was his most important piece of equipment. He vacuumed 3 times before putting down a thin wood underlayment. He vacuumed 3 times after that. He said any little thing on the floor would "telegraph" up and show under the new flooring.
