How can I revive the top of a tiled kitchen island?

My kitchen island was beautifully created with oak trim around a tiled table top. The tile has to go. What suggestion do you have to re-create the island top?

Hi Sandra! Are you looking for directions on applying new tiles? Or would you like to apply a new surface? There are laminates that you can have cut to a custom size, as well as beautiful stone, quartz and butcher block.

You could remove the tiles and put down new ones, or you could go with a good piece of oak and stain it to match the trim.

I agree with Nancy. Remove the tile, scrape off any adhesive, glue down some 1/4" oak plywood and seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.

You could also see, if you can get a scrap of marble, or other stone, from where they sell the larger ones. Or give mosaics DIY A try. Pintrest has many beautiful ideas for that.

  • You could also skim coat the tiles with concrete if the tile base is secure and not cracked. Look at Ardex or Henry feather finish. It's cheap too.

Emy, that is what I was looking for - I will look into it. Thanks
