How do I clean a plastic water tank?
I have a 1000 litre water reservoir / tank for rain water and it has accumulated dirt and gunk stuck to the inside of the tank. I want to clean the inside without damaging the plastic or leaving toxic residues on the plastic - this because I would like to use the water as drinking water in drought situations and when the power is out (I live in South Africa!) and there is no water pumped from the municipal reservoirs. The tank was a gift from the previous home owner but he used to collect bath water, etc. to water the garden. I wish to use it for drinking water. Please advise.

Vinagar will clean the gunk and dirt. We have a well and storage tank system and have cleaned them many times over the years.
I agree, vinegar is the best choice.
Thank you very much. Will try this remedy over the weekend.
If you want to keep your water tank clean, we highly recommend using a first flush diverter. This serves as an initial filter, preventing debris, dust, and dirt from reaching your water tank. It's a great way to filter out most of the debris before it enters the tank.
We also advise using a filter before consumption of said water. There are various filter solutions, including a special filter that utilises a carbon filter and UV light sterilisation, guaranteeing clean and bacteria-free water. Alternatively, there are Hydra Shield and Tank Safe products, which are chemicals you can add to your tank to sterilise the water inside.
