If anyone has covered popcorn ceilings with real wood panels or planks, can you tell me where to find the cheapest/lightest options? Thanks, All, for your suggestions! Joanne

free pallets or someone dismantling an old barn might be your sources for wood, also save the nails !
There is somewhere on here a re decorated kitchen that has a popcorn ceiling covered over w/ styrofoam ceiling tiles. It is gorgeous. Google it. Wish has some also.
Styrofoam tiles come in many designs in 12/12 square.
Check out the explore projects button on the upper right of the window. It gives categories, choose one that will include ceilings, more options will come up and look for the category you want for ceilings and it will lead you to projects that you may want to look at for your ceiling.
Cheapest and lightest are not going to be the same. Lightest would be a styrofoam or plastic tiles (I used Fasade on my walls - it's plastic and you can cut it with a knife and stick it up with the super sticky double sided tape they sell with it). Cheapest would probably be the sheets of paneling that looks like bead board.
