It will depend on your zone, soil type, sun exposure, amount of time you are willing to spend, and physical abilities. I like beds around trees and flowering bushes like azaleas, roses, and camellias.
I agree with Kathy. You should also consider how much you want to mow around, how much you can afford and don't forget about how much the plants will need watering. If you are in a dry area and you will have to pay for your water consumption that could be a factor. I have built some raised beds for the front of my house. Easier for me to reach when weeding. Don't damage the plants when I mow or weed wack and keeps the mulch in so that I don't lose it to the yard. Happy gardening :)
