Bamboo sends out underground runners. Root growth can occur much farther out than the above ground canes. Bamboo roots run parallel to the surface, typically in the first 18” or less of soil. Step Three: To control the bamboo, you want to cut unwanted growth at ground level. You can mow it down when it is just coming out of the ground. Otherwise use a sharp spade and cut through the roots to cut off and remove them from pulling out the shallow roots in the direction you do NOT want them to grow.
