If it is bath/shower or bathroom sink, get one of those long flat barbed plastic tools to get out all the hair before you do anything or those drains will clog up pretty quickly again. I use about a half cup baking soda to one cup vinegar, I have never covered the drain, I don't think that is necessary. I wait until the fizzing stops, then I put down a little bit of vinegar to see if all the baking soda is used up, if it is, I put down about a gallon of boiling water and the sink should be open, repeat if necessary. In the kitchen, if you have a double sink, treat both drains at the same time so all the pipes get cleaned. I use the same formula for the ingredients. When it comes to the boiling water, I put down about a quarter of the gallon down the disposal side first, then half the gallon down the other drain and finish with the other quarter down the disposal side, that way I know that nothing was washed back into the disposal and left to dry out. If it doesn't work, you may have a clog further down the pipes than this hack can reach. I had this happen and the clog was down not too far from where the pipe actually left the house. I ended up getting a plumber friend that does some of our plumbing work that we can't do and paid him to bring in his professional tools to get down to the clog that nothing else would open. We have an opening in the pipe from the sink drain in the basement and he opened the pipe to make sure he was getting down the pipe and he was extremely impressed with how this hack had the pipe so clean you could of eaten off it (he actually made that comment) and said he was going to start doing this to keep his drains open and tell some customers about it that are constantly clogging their drains.
Pour in 1/2 to 1 cup baking soda and then top off with pure vinegar until it gets to the trap. You will hear it fizz. Let it sit as long as overnight if you can and then use a sink of hot water to get the debris to move. Do this at least once a month and it will help prevent further problems.
I use draino!
