Oven cleaner. Spray bbq grill. Put in black plastic bag. Put bag in full sun location. Retrieve late afternoon. Hose off gunk. Use scouring pad. Rinse when it looks clean.

Patti....Most any oven cleaner would be my idea too using a scraper.
I've got a buddy, who works in the food packaging industry. He told me that using a steel brush, to clean SS, you're risking rust. I generally use a brass brush, and scrub the grate after it's hot. I've never had a problem, and I still use a wire wheel(although VERY occasionally).
To easily clean the "grill area" of your bbq, use a heavy duty plastic garbage bag and add a cup of ammonia and the grills from your bbq. Tie it off well so no air or ammonia can escape and let the bag lay flat on concrete or gravel area overnight. In the morning take the grills out of the bag and rinse off well with the garden hose. Use a scrubby if some debris is still adhering. Rinse well.
Patti, before I use my grill, I always spray it with Pam and cover it with aluminum foil. For burned on stains, I use a metal-bristled brush, plus a paste of baking soda and the same amount of vinegar, brushed on the stains as soon as you mix the paste. Let it sit a while, then scrub with the brush. When all the gunk is gone, polish the grill and stone.
Run your bath tub faucet on full hot water until its scalding hot. Turn it off. Then place Bounce dryer sheets on the bottom of your bath tub to line it completely. Then remove all the removable parts from the grill (racks, smoker, etc.) and place them on top of the bounce sheets and cover the parts and dryer sheets with scalding hot water until completely submerged. Let sit and add boiled water if the water level goes down exposing the parts. After about 90 minutes you can go in and basically wipe the grime off all the parts. All that's left is cleaning the tub! Sounds like a lot of work but its really easy and it works. Good luck!
