AMDRO Ant Bait put on trails they carry back to nest and it kills queen then colony
feed them! a mixture of equal parts borax, sugar and corn meal. They carry it into the nest and feed the colony. In a day or so ,you will see a ring of dead ants around the hill. A couple more days they all will be dead.
Here's a video that might help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9R_W-3v_0lg
When you're ready to get serious use this - BASF 396153 Advance Granular Carpenter Ant Bait, 8oz
It's expensive, but it works.
I had a serious infestation of harvester ants when I moved into my home. The entire front yard was an underground colony. I tried all the regular baits in the box stores, all the 'natural' remedies, even tried boiling water over and over. Nothing worked. The queen(s) always produced thousands more within days.
After hours and hours of off and on research, I found Advance. It worked. It took 3 months of this ongoing 'war' to finally get the right product and thankfully no one was bitten...that I know of.
It's marketed for carpenter ants, but will take care of fire ants, harvester ants and more. Read the reviews for tips and stick with it. It works.
Baby powder poured into anthill.
I use Ortho Fire Ant Killer. Comes on a black plastic jug with a yellow top. Lowe's carries it. Open up the yellow screw off cover. Take a 10 penny nail and poke 4 holes in the cardboard seal on the top to make a shaker.
Go to each ant hill and and drag your foot across the top of the mound to stir it up. Shake the white powder on top of the ants and in a couple of hours they are done for. It smells like a sewer system. But it works well.
If you have pets and children, do it just before dark on a night your going to get rain. The mound will be killed and the powder will get washed into the soil by the rain. If no rain, then take your garden hose after a couple of hours and wash it into the soil using a spray.
