Some varieties yes, some no. Some say to pluck the first year strawberries to grow a stronger root system. Do not over fertilize as you will end up with lush foliage and no fruit in succeeding years. My strawberry patch is well over 20 years old and I add a couple new plants each year. I am in zone 9.
