Have you tried the thriller-filler-spiller method? Choose something that stands tall (that's your thriller), fill in with medium-height plants that tend to grow full (filler), then plant trailing plants along the edges (that's the spiller). Combined they provide a lush, full planter that seems to "spill" flowers in all directions.

Just get anything that trails, I'd say. I love trailing plans. I have a big beautiful bacopa in a hanging plant and it definitely meets the "spilling over" requirement!
