It's probably getting too much nitrogen. You need to add phosphorus, Phyllis. Check with your local garden center.
If it is the Japanese (japonica) type, run, don't walk and remove it immediately. Ask the vendor where you purc hsed it. What you see along the roadside is the Japonica type and it kills trees as it smothers them. It willl grow everywhere and spits out seeds all over your yard and your neighbor's yard. The trunk can take down a house. My friend didn't believe me until he went into his attic and saw it growing there.
It's almost as invasive as kudzu which also came from Japan. Those in charge thought it would be a good ground cover but forgot our weather in the south doesn't kill it back.
