Damp swiffer or dampen a swiffer with diluted white cleaning vinegar.
Dawn dish liquid, vinegar, and hot water. TSP or Krud Kutter. The stains tend to be oily.
If it is a small spot try a little bit of bleach and water on a rag and wipe it off. If it is a large area you may need to have the ceiling painted.
It’s a long strip about 6” wide by 12 feet long
I did use Fantastic Spray on 1 of my Longaberger basket liners. It was a white floral print & as I was spraying it on the nicotine was running right off into the sink. I was shocked! So I saturated all of my Longaberger basket liners & washed as I normally do for any clothes or linens & everyone of them came out just as if I bought a new liner for everyone of my baskets! I was very surprised & happy.
Thanks everyone I tried them all, when I found Fantastic spray worked miracles on my Longaberger basket liners, I tried this on everything else also. I used a swiffer mop on the ceiling & it worked perfect!

Try creating a thick paste by combining a very tiny amount of water with the powdered cleanser TSP (trisodium phosphate; found at paint and home-improvement stores) and blotting it just on the stained area. Use sparingly since applying too much could cause the stain to spread. Make sure to test a tiny area beforehand.
Use a Cowl over your candle then you would not have the problem. But to answer your question. Use a bowl of soapy water and a sponge (It will get worse before it gets better - as you may end up having to wash the whole ceiling and then even re-painting it)!
Hi Cheryl, here are a couple i=of ideas for you. Vacuuming is the best first step for cleaning—but tread lightly. Smearing the soot makes cleanup harder. Use the brush attachment or keep the nozzle about a half-inch to an inch away from the soot to suck it away without rubbing it into the wall or ceiling.
Wiping the ceiling with one-teaspoon of TSP--Trio-Sodium Phosphate--and a gallon of lukewarm water. Products are also sold by retailers that can help remove smoke stains off ceilings or interior walls
