How can I update the appearance of picture front curio cabinet?
I have a wood picture-frame curio cabinet that I would like to give an updated look. It is about 7ft. high and 3ft. wide and is stained a cherry color. I am thinking about maybe just painting the picture-frame itself and the side black and leave the top and bottom molding as is. I do have some black accents in the room - picture frames and a wood curtain rod. Is there some type of paint I can use to see how it looks that would could be fairly easily removed if I do not like it? Also, if I do commit to the black, what would be the best type of paint to use - chalk paint, or milk paint, or something else? Thanks for any suggestions!

Once you paint it and don't like it you'd have to strip.it to remove, nothing easy about it. Chalk paint can't be black, the darkest it comes is charcoal grey.
I think.you idea sounds nice, but if worried about it, it will hard to go back since you'll ruin the original finish due to painting. If you don't prep by sanding first and use latex paint and primer, it will peel and chip. For a better finish use oil based paint and primer.
Oh this sounds super pretty! Dixie Belle's Caviar (black) Is great, Also General Finishes "Black Pepper" Is one of my favorite chalk style paints! It's a true rich deep black. No gray tones to it! You can check out my post here on painting furniture black. :)

Thanks for your reply Megan! I think I am feeling a little intimidated since I don't really have much experience with painting furniture, except for a small nightstand and shelf, and I didn't really do a wonderful job on that because I wound up with brushstrokes that drive me crazy. This curio cabinet is a nice piece of furniture, and I wouldn't want to ruin it. I think it might be a good idea to start on something smaller using different types of paint and see how I make out first.
You could use chalk paint, very easy and forgiving, leaving the pictures as they are. Then you could find a beautiful patterned fabric and cover pieces of wood or poster board trimmed to the size of the pictures. Attach it to the piece with removable spray adhesive in case you change your mind later.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. However, I was asking about painting a glass curio cabinet with a "picture-frame" front. Guess I should have made my post a bit clearer in that regard!
