What is the best way to brighten up old dark (almost black) shiplap?
The whole living room is dark shiplap, making it look like a cave. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you considered painting?
You could paint it out but you will need a primer such as Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 and then paint. You can adda tint to the primer to match your final coat so that only one final coat is required.
Paint it a nice white.
Hello Dixie! You can paint your ship lap a lighter color. You should probably prime first so you don't get any bleed through. Use a brush for the seams and then you can use a roller for the rest. Use a good quality interior paint.
Hi Dixie, if you want a total change, just primer with Kilz or Zinsser and repaint to a color you'll enjoy more. If you don't want to do a total redo, using some canned LED uplights in the corners of the room will add drama to the nearly black shiplap.
Has the shiplap already been stained or painted? If the wood pieces are dark themselves, painting it may be your only option. But if there is lighter wood under the dark, you could use a hand sander to distress the wood a bit. That would brighten it. It would be a lot of work though depending on how many walls have the shiplap.
white wash them it would be beautiful with dark under tone--here are videos https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=diy+white+washed+wood+
