Hi Sharon, I've found the best way to remove the rust and other built up gunk is to use steel wool pads to scrub the pans thoroughly. I like the ones that have the soap included in them. Scrub and sour the pans until the area returns to raw cast iron. Lots of elbow grease and a messy job. Then wash with warm soapy water and dry well with paper towels. To season the pans, use some vegetable oil on a paper towel and rub lightly over the pans and then place in an oven and back for 1/2 hour at 325-350 degrees. No more rust and your pans are ready to cook in again.
Here are some tips for cast iron skillets: https://www.craftylittlegnome.com/clean-season-cast-iron-skillet/
You can drizzle oil on the pan, pour some salt on it and then cut a potato in half and use the potato to scrub the rust off. Then re-season the pan.
You'll have to clean it and reseason it.
