When I was in business my crew and I installed thousands of replacement windows. Now it's easy for the DIY since they are sold at homecenters. Should take no more than about an hour per window.
If you have sliding single-pane aluminum windows (common around 1965) it is easy to upgrade to double-pane. We had Viking brand windows and a Viking dealer was located nearby. The sliding window can be removed by moving toward and center, lifted up, and swung out. I removed the screen, removed 2 screws holding the center divider, and then slid the divider away from the fixed glass (might need a rubber mallet for persuasion). The fixed glass section can be removed using same process as sliding window. The tracks should be cleaned and then insert the new glass panels by reversing the process. The dealer even gave credit for the returned panels, but that was in the late 70s when did that. I also got replacement patio door panels.
