It al depends on what the floor covering is. Normally transitions will be placed such that you don't see another type of floor covering when the door is closed. You don't want to see a narrow strip of carpet if the other floor is a tile or hardwood.
agreed...depends on the flooring in each room. There are transition pieces sold at general hardware stores - and if they match what you have, then that is the best bet.
I third the previous posts. Each flooring product has it's own threshold strip that is appropriate for that type of flooring.
