my azailias are 50+ years old and I don't think they have ever been trimmed. Most of the branches only have flowers on the ends. the branches are 1" or more in diameter near the roots.

The Rule Of 1/3 rds. Cut each mo more than 1/3 of its length. Cut back to a growth bud or a secondary branch point.

Azaleas need acidic soil and Miracle Grow makes Miracid, pink box.

Be sure and keep the old blossoms and leaf clippings picked up & trashed, as they’re prone to a fungal infection, that causes the blossoms to wilt.

Make sure you only trim once all blooms are gone. Remove as you clip them. I use a pair of lopping shears.

I add pine straw and coffee grounds to help increase the soil acidity.

I love Miracle Grow for acid loving plants.
