Hi Mar-c,
I would edge around the table with real wood trim (Mitre the corners), then use a Wood Veneer on the top, or maybe use Laminated flooring or even Contact with a wood finish, or Paint the top with an emulsion the colour you would like the wood to be and the use a dry brush method and drag a thick varnish (the way you want the grain of wood to be ). iF YOU CAN'T BUY A THICK VARNISH FOR GRAINING - leave some varnish open to the air for a bit , until it becomes thicker. The reason for this is to give a grain to your wood. Do practice this method before trying on your table. You could try buy using Match Pots of emulsion! Enjoy!! It is also possible to achieve a wood look by using Liquid Brown Polish over emulsion too!
If the bare chipboard is showing, before you do anything, paint on a good coat of a shellac based primer to permeate the surface and give other coatings something solid to stick too. Never try to paint bare chip board with latex paint because the water in the paint will cause the wood to swell. Oil or shellac based paint will seal the chips and prevent swelling. After the primer coat, you can use latex paint. I would put formica on the top, then finish the edges with wood ribbon that you actually iron on the edges. Check your options at a lock home center. You can usually find the wood ribbon edging around the "furniture quality" plywood. It comes in several widths. Even if you cannot find the exact width it is very easy to trim with a utility knife
It’s cheap chipboard and it can’t magical change to real wood. By the way do you have access to a ton of carpenter tools and enough knowledge and skill to use them ?

FORGET IT -- go get some wood at the lumber yard and MAKE a new one to YOUR design and satisfaction! Stain the wood to your taste (or leave natural, too) then give three coats of acrylic matte finish-- resists stains, heat, and other obnoxious accidents! GOOD LUCK! What I have done with my round pedestal table (the glass top got broken!)-- I got plywood and did different shapes-- rectangular, round, octagonal, and square with round corners .. they're FANTASTIC-- they are light weight and totally reversable and changeable! Two surfaces on each table top-- some stained, and some natural light ... Basically I have 8 table tops to use at my whim ...
