I put a scoop of Borax in mine. Make sure they go into the dryer as soon as the washer is finished on high heat. No issues or problems. I also use fabric softener even though everyone says don't but mine are still super absorbent, even the ones that are years old.
Ibwash in hot water and add a tiny bit of bleach if colors and some Downey fabric softener. Dry immediately after washing.

When towels smell a little 'off' or 'sour' I've either left them in the hamper too long or forgot about them in the washer. I add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Ammonia to the wash water and wash them in the hottest temperature tollerated. If the towels smell like ammonia when they're finished, I'll rewash again. Final step ... try not to let it happen again.
