It depends on what they are painted with, water or oil base, you want to stick with the same type. Myself, I would use a marine poly or something like that, it is made for being outside in all types of weather. I did the steps we replaces at our back door with it three years ago, even with four dogs constantly going up and down them (doggy door), and the rains, sleet, ice and snow we get all the time, it still looks perfect.
If glazed not much will stick to.it. I'd try spray Spar varnish., but don't be surprised if it and the paint will peel.

I used a spray on sealer made to be used outdoors on mine. Rustoleum and Krylon both make one, and there are other brands, as well. I hope this helps you. Wishing you the best.
Hi Terry, I bought a matted finish spray on clear coat and sprayed my pottery bird that stays out all summer, it gives it a sealing but is not shiny. I used this one
