My sister uses snake away and says she can tell a difference, hasn't seen any since she put it out.
Dad uses moth balls and they haven't had snakes in the yard or near the house but they also have a cat.
Cats are great for keeping mice & snakes away.
Set glue traps and keep rodents out of the area.
They like to lay in the sun, but also like hiding places to go to if they need it. The suggestion about rodents is also good. If there is no food for them, they would be less apt to want to be in your yard.
Put a plastic owl where the snake is.
