Fine steel wool, scrub and then paint with a rust resistant paint.
Ditto Kathy but add some vinegar to scrubbing
We removed the panels and taped paper up on the walls then after a quick cleaning of the gridwork we painted it with Rustoleum spray paint (in black). We also painted the panels (white) to brighten them up. Looks great!
We spray painted our old grids. It worked well except for the cloud of fine spray paint particles lofting through the air and settling around the room. Cover EVERYTHING if you are going to spray paint and wear a mask. Close any basement doors to the rest of your house. Don't spray paint with the furnace running!
