How do I pour cement on part rock and part clay?

Part of the existing concrete patio was removed to access and replace the sewer line and was filled with rock. I want to have the remaining concrete patio removed and have a new concrete patio poured over the entire area. I'm concerned about pouring cement over the two different adjoining areas, and can cement can be poured over rock. Thank you.

If you plan to remove the rest of the concrete you will need a base of gravel (stone). That is the way it's done. Can't just pour concrete over soil. Why not just patch the the dug out area with concrete level with the rest of the slab. Let it cure for about thirty days before doing anything else. Then you can paint it or resurface it.

  • Yes concrete can be poured over rock. Any concrete contractor worth his salt will come in and prep the area. When they do, take time to watch the process, it's quite fascinating and an art when done correctly.

You should have a clean level surface to pour the concrete.

You must remove the dirt and put concrete on top of rock.
