It is a matter of personal choice or safety. More neutral colors are best if you may be selling the house soon. It is safer for people prone to falls than other floor surfaces with throw or area rugs. But never in a bathroom!
Mostly a matter of personal preference. Some people in colder climates like at least in bedrooms so the floor is warmer. Some it is a safety issue if you have elderly or disabled individuals in the household. If you like it, use it. There is no right or wrong.
I think it is a matter of personal preference... I prefer "wood" with wool area rugs.
With all the colors and types of carpet yes! I think it depends on your age and your choice of decor. The younger generation I think prefer the "wood" appearance and also it depends on the climate where you live. I have recently gone to the wood look in my basement but still have the carpet in various rooms in my house. One word of advice never put carpet in the kitchen or in the bathrooom. The older homes you will find have this in these two rooms and I never regretted ripping them up and putting down my choice of flooring.
