Hi Anne,
The fruit flies probably came into your house on the produce you bought. When you buy produce wash it and immediately refrigerate, except bananas. The eggs on the unwashed fruit hatch at room temperature, creating the next generation of fruit flies. They need moisture so they take up residence on more fruit or your sink drain. To treat the drain, put 1/2 cup baking soda and add 1 cup vinegar, when the fizzing stops rinse with hot water. Then close off your drain.
For the immediate fruit flies, get sticky cardboard traps from Walmart (pest control section) and put a piece of sweet decaying fruit on it, that will draw the flies. They will land and that is that for them.
Best to you.
Hi Anne!
A few years back we had a real infestation of fruit flies in our kitchen. We put several bowls of apple cider vinegar around for this problem. Good luck. Hope you have quick relief!!

Put apple cider vinegar in a small glass with plastic wrap over the top. Punch a hole in the plastic wrap for them to go into the glass, they are not too good at finding their way out the same hole.
Some old fruit in a dish put plastic wrap tightly over the dish then using a tooth pick make several tiny holes.
Also in your kitchen sink drain pour in a bit of ammonia and plug it up over night.

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap. Microwave the bowl so the mixture becomes even more aromatic. Leave the bowl out uncovered as fruit fly bait. The soap will reduce the surface tension, causing any fruit fly that lands on the surface to drown.
