Krud Kutter is a good degreaser.
Try TSP and a scrub brush.
Hi Joy,
I would scrub it with equal parts of vinegar & water with a few drops of Dawn. I white washed (with watered down latex paint) ours after just vacuuming it good in my living room and it turned out great. Ours had black "mortar" and gray/white & black Z bricks Wishing you the best.

How to White Wash With Paint
You may need to use a bonding primer over the brick to seal off the grease and then a good paint.
TSP will cut right through any grease. Let dry then prime and paint.
