Do you have a picture of the space?
We used a nylon line stretched taut and pinned to the ground as a guide to make a straight edge. A flat nosed shovel or an edging blade helps to cut the soil. In most cases, you should cut the soil down 2-3" minimum for the blocks to be inset and then bring soil or rock up to it to hold the blocks in place.
