  • Chalk paint would be a good choice, since it doesn't require any priming or sanding, and changing out the hardware would also change the look.

I think a light colored paint (depending on color scheme of your foyer) with gold accent pieces would transform this piece into something up to date and bring it back to life!

If it is a little loosie goosie in the legs, take it apart, resand the joints and then use wood glue and put back together before painting. It is very "Plain Jane" and needs lightening up to update the look. Paint is cheap. Spend some on the hardware, gold or even crystal knobs would be fab. Then some accessories would be the cherry on top.

Thanks Sharon. What are the accessories would you suggest?

It is 'plain Jane' as you mentioned. I wish I could change the legs, but the are not screwed on. They are part of the side panel. Also wish I could add some embellishments to make it bulkier and fancier.

This would make a lovely bench. It would take some work with cutting the legs down and adding a cushion top.

But agree, chalk paint and if by flimsy, you mean the legs are loose, generally you can just tighten legs by tightening screws, unless they are glued. Then I would do what Sharon suggested.

I would stain it darker with General Finishes then wax, and change the handles.

I love the mix of wood and paint. I would leave the top and drawers wood and paint the carcass. Your choice of color based on you decor. Replace the drawer pulls. Some ideas.

Two ideas, 1. I like the tables that Rainbow Bee posted. Paint it white and paint the legs gold, but maybe get a mirror cut to fit the top. Paint the handles white, so they blend in and hang pretty tassels from them. ( Tuesday Morning, in the curtain accessories usually have great ones). Maybe if you can anchor it to the wall, it will be steady. Also it’s a pretty small table for the length of your wall. Beef it up with maybe a couple of chairs on either side of it. Hang the mirror on the wall, and maybe just add a tray for keys, and glasses. Utilize those drawers for small items. One other look is a Black paint, or Midnight Blue, with the gold legs. Here’s a photo of a stunning piece, that would still look good on your table, but just a little less bold.

Thank you for suggestions Lorraine. I was also thinking it is pretty small for that area. You are quite observant. Maybe I could bulk it up a bit. But it has such a cheap finish.

Sand it down to original wood put high varnish and paint with stencil forms silver or gold overlap at corners get huge picture frame at garage sale thrift shop & give it the same treatment the beauty of the retreated entry table will reflect in the mirror like an extra wall of same.
