How to keep cats out of a doorless room?

My living room does not have a door and I just had the furniture upholstered. Need inexpensive way to keep cats out and still enjoy my furniture. Remember Cats can jump and what would work for a dog want for a cat. Thanks!

I got new couch and had two antique chair reupholstered. I went to a salvage store and bought and old screen door. Scraped and painted it, removed the screen and put in chicken run wire screen in it. (The little half inch squares used for chicken coops not the big octagon shaped wire) Can see thru it, and not kitties sharpening their claws on new furniture. They had the run of the rest of the house so one room was no big deal. I had the round top archways into it from two sides. I put a door on each side but the arch was so wide I built a 2 x 4 frame to accommodate the screen door. In the two by four area, I added on cross bar partially down and then half round strips to fill in the gaps so they could not get thru. Painted it all white except the screen. you can add decorative pieces to the corners of the screen where it meets the corners of the frame and it looks like and old Victorian door.

I bought my cat claw caps when I got new furniture.

  • I just tossed throws over the furniture. In my house there is no way to block the room off as it leads to every other room in the house, yes it's small. I like Em's solution, very creative. Oh and I have 6 cats and other pets.
