How can we get rid of flies in the basement?
We have a lower level entrance to our home in NYC. Their are all attached homes on this street and all have this same problem, at least 7 months out of the year. When we come down the stairs we are attacked by over a dozen flies of all sizes. We have tried so many different things to solve this problem and over the years, nothing has worked.Attached is a photo of the door going out of the area because I didn’t want to walk down and be attacked.🥺😩 If you think you have a solution, PLEASE let us know.Thank you so much.

I have fruit flies and can't get rid of them. I don't even have any food or fruit out.
Hi Carole, I use hot shot no pest strips and works great for gnats so may it would work for other flies.
Lots of tips here: https://www.craftylittlegnome.com/flies-house-suddenly/
I don't know how this would work with flies, but diatomaceous earth is the best thing for every other kind of crawling bug in the house. It is wonderful because every person and pet are safe to have it around. Google it.
Saw this at an outdoor restaurant, take a large gallon plastic storage bag, fill with water and put in a few shiny pennies, tie shut and hang up outside the door. Worked for the restaurant.😃
Carole, the best thing is to find out where the flies are breeding and eliminate that source. Since all the neighbors are dealing with the problem, too, it's got to be outside - somewhere on your street. If you can't find the source, then you're going to need to do what we do on Texas horse farms - trap them before they come in. There's something called the Barn Fly Trap that actually works. You can find it on Amazon since you're probably not near a feed store. It's a netted container that baits the flies similar to a wasp catcher. They go in and can't get out. It doesn't stink like a lot of them do and you can hang it fairly inconspicuously if necessary. The flies WILL find it.
Another help would be to replace the weatherstripping on the doors. Flies will head inside through any crack.
I also use a cedar oil & water spray on the outside of our door. Just about 10 drops of essential oil in 2 cups of water. Spray the entire entry and door frame. They HATE the smell. You'll probably need to do this daily. It keeps other bugs away, too. Best of luck!
