How do I put a small flower garden in my lawn??
We would like to put a small flower/herb garden where there is currently grass growing. What are the steps we need to take?? Grass removed, etc. I am guessing this bed would be about an 8' half moon.... thank you!!!!

Borrow or rent a sod cutter to remove existing vegetation.
Hi Deb. You can lay out your design with some landscape paint or a hose. Use a spade to dig in about 4-6 inches and lift the grass for your edges. Then it's just a matter of removing all the grass and roots either by hand with a shovel and hoe or renting a sod cutter. Till up the soil once all the grass and roots are removed, add amendments if needed, plant, mulch, and enjoy!😊
Exactly what Karen said!
use a rope long electric cord or hose whatever you have (no need to buy paint) to mark out area & don't waste money on sod cutter they do not go deep enuf( 2-3"s) to remove grass roots.you need to be 6-8"s deep to getv all roots so invest in/buy really good strong sharp pointed shovel and strong flat rake; add good solid edging to stop it coming back into garden area; then add mixture of topsoil(3) & good compost(1) adding enuf to level area plant lots of goodies Perennials,Annuals and Herbs;add lots of redworms(Uncle Jims Worm Farm)Live Lady Bugs (High Sierra Lady Bugs)Praying Mantis egg cases (Ebay) Green Lacewing & Nematodes (Arbico Organics) I have done all this in mine never need fertilizers, pesticides. I let mine reseed themselves, so In spring pull out weeds by hand and thin out new plants I don't want as they come up when they are young small easy to pull out. I have different perennials, annuals, bulbs, tubers that grow thru out year with the year round herbs so I have color and fragrance all the time. a really great corm to grow is Freesia Best smelling flowers ever! Don't know where you live but they need dug up in late fall and replanted in Spring as soon as last ground freeze over. Do not remove any dying dead foliage until Spring it helps protect plants thu winter and good for soil. then put in composter(definitely need one of these put all the grass you are throwing out in it too) Old garden rule for cold climates "never plant til after Mothers Day" last ground freeze, and most Perennials/Herbs need in ground in Fall as well as most bulbs. I'm excited for you I to garden and mixed beds are the absolute best you'll have so many Bees,Butterflies,Hummingbirds,Moths,Birds
