What to do with this magazine rack?
Got this from a thrift store for $10. Stain on top and some damage on sides. Not sure the year, but want to give it an art deco feel. Suggestions?

Gloria...It is really a lovely piece. I believe I would clean well, then sand top and the other damaged area you mentioned. I would try to find the same stain and then attempt to match. If you aren't happy you can alway use a stripper such as Citristrip. Good luck!
it's nice great deal...I'd citristrip, sand lightly, shellac primer to prevent tannin bleed thru if painting and if staining (a little darker to cover any imperfections)then clear shellac to seal immediately so it doesn't bleed thru may need multiple coats; add glass shelf in middle and remove the sides cut them into pieces add back on to sides between wings for small shelving and use as nightstand or sidetable, even could add small tap light of somekind under top to shine thru the glass shelf-lighting whole inside when light is needed
It's a pretty cool piece! Take a look at various mid century modern magazine holders and how others may have redone them. Look at the colors of the 50's and various combinations.
I'm about to also paint a 50's style magazine table and will be using chalk paint to keep my prep to a minimum. I'm using a light blue/green ("oops" $2) over factory finish white. Like yours, mine also has some detailing that I haven't yet decided how to "play" with. As my style isn't really chippy or farmhouse but more deco, industrial I will probably use my artist brushes to paint in a really great "oops" color ($1) from Home Depot that is a metallic wine/black.
Play up the carving on yours. Have fun with it! If all fails, there's always more paint lol! 😎
