How do I use chalk paint to paint over an old laminate nightstand?

I'd like to repaint a laminate nightstand in cream chalk paint, but am not sure how to get the paint to adhere. Do I need to sand the original piece? Do I need primer? What type of brush do I use? or would it look better spray painted? thanks for your help. Working on it this weekend.

All paint will scratch off laminate if scratched. If you like the look and dull finish if chalk paint that would work, if want more shiney, spray paint will work. For chalk paint scuff up laminate with a scrubby sponge. Clean the rest of piece with TSP. No primer needed, just paint with reg paint brush. Use Rustoleum brand chalk paint and top coat. For spray paint, do same prep and use a quality spray paint.

    Hi there,

Use Easy Surface Primer (ESP) first and then paint over it!

I would use a primer on the laminate first if you don't plan on distressing. You can sand it very lightly to give your paint a bit more adhesion. Use a extra fine sandpaper so you don't get any scratches. Clean it well before you prime. As for a finish coat after your chalk paint you can use wax or a clear water based poly. If you use a water based poly it will not yellow over white chalk paint. I prefer chalk paint vs spray paint. Did you know that Rustoleum makes a chalk paint in a spray can--it is called Rustoleum Chalked and comes in the same colors as the Rustoleum Chalked paint in the can. It gives a very smooth matte finish. HOWEVER--of you chose the chalked paint in the can PLEASE buy the clear sealer that is available to go with this Rustoleum line of paint. I have tried to use other clear sealers with this paint and have had trouble with bubbling and cracking. Wax works fine as a finish coat on this chalk spray paint. My favorite clear wax is Annie Sloan. It is a bit expensive but it lasts for a very long time. I use Purdy or Wooster brushes. Available at Home Depot and Menards.
