How do I trim my boxwood shrubs?
Of course, the best way to avoid having to cut back overgrown boxwoods is not to let them get overgrown in the first place. Most types grow slowly, so one pruning a year keeps them in bounds. In general you should not remove any more than 1/4 of the shrub in a season. If reducing in size drastically, this requires a two step approach and should be done in the early spring. First cut one half of all the large branches. The second year the remaining branches would be pruned in the same manner. The temperature should be above freezing so shrubs/ends do not get severly damaged. You can remove any dead wood at any time. they are pretty resilient shrubs
An hedge trimmer would be the easiest way. Or you can hire a garden service to do it for you.
