How do we make our side yards aesthetically pleasing?
Our houses are quite close to each other and we share a side yard with our neighbors (on both sides).
These side yards are on a steep incline and we cannot get grass to grow as when it rains there is too much water runoff. We have installed drainage, but even that does not work. What can we do improve the aesthetics of the side yard?

Make it a dry river bed garden. Dig the trench a little deeper to help with the water runoff.
I would do gravel or rock, as Ann suggested. You can situate plants in pots to add color and green. I did this in a couple of areas where the soil just won't grow anything.
I agree, too. Rock allows for good drainage and you could set a few planters on the rock for color
Yes, forget the live plants. Work on keeping water out of your house.
Yard art too.
Hi Robyn,
That is a great question and one that many of us have a real problem with.
Neighbors living on top of each other, many with high fences do not even see what is going on the other side of their fence where they still have some of their weeds and grass growing. An easy way to deal with this is to plant shrubs or evergreens and when they grow you will have a nice border, lovely green shrubs or trees.
