New hardware is the easiest ay to update cabinets of any type. If you do not like them, paint them the same color (but in enamel finish) to match the walls. They will then fade into the walls.
Paint is the easiest way. You can paint the hardware with RustOleum enamel paint or replace it. Then paint or refinish the cabinet. Since you didn't mention the materials, I'm guessing wood so either way will work. Also add lighting and mirrors to lighten up the area. Make sure to go with a light finish on the update.
Have you considered chalk painting it? OR one popular style is to stain the wooden top dark and painting the bottom part with seagull grey or something. (light color) Hope this helps, SAndy
Use accent lighting or frame it with some baseboards or foam boards. You can paint the base/foam boards a complimentary shade to an additional pop to draw the eye to where its at.
There are a few options that you could choose to really brighten the end of the hallway. You could paint the entire cabinet with either a Chalky Paint or a Milk Paint.
You could also use some contact paper on the back of it if there are open shelves. You can pick a fun pattern like this one... https://www.girljustdiy.com/super-fast-wooden-tray-update-with-pretty-contact-paper/
The other way would be to add a fun and unexpected backsplash using Dollar Store glass. Here's my post on how I did it to the over toilet cabinet in our bathroom makeover. .. https://www.girljustdiy.com/dollar-store-glass-backsplash-tutorial/
I would paint it a light color like white, and add lighting, it will improve the hallway and brighten up the space.
