Shiplap is a kind of wooden board that’s often used for constructing sheds, barns, and other rustic buildings. Traditional shiplap has a rabbet (or groove) cut into the top and bottom, which allows the pieces to fit together snugly, forming a tight seal. This also gives shiplap its distinctive appearance, with subtle horizontal reveals between each piece.

Hi Joan,
Shiplap is lapped boarding that is usually hung on walls - horizontally. Here's a tutorial on how to make your own - https://www.hometalk.com/diy/build/walls/make-your-own-shiplap-30401397
and here's one that shows you how it looks in place: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/build/walls/shiplap-wall-for-under-40-17827315

Shiplap is a type of wooden board used commonly as exterior siding in the construction of residences, barns, sheds, and outbuildings.
It's mainly a fad, sorta like 1980s mirrored walls.
Shiplap is a type of cut wood joinery that makes the wall look like the side of a boat.... my old house on the Oregon coast has cedar shiplap. This was mainly recovered wood from old houses that used it underneath their wall boards for insulation purposes or it was recovered from wrecked ships on our stormy coast for cheap building materials.
The new fad is to just put boards on the wall leaving a gap between them to give the illusion of shiplap. This was made popular by Joanna Gaines, but the artistry of the joinery was lost, so.... its boards on a wall.
Kinda like wood paneling, but horizontal.
