How do I paint kitchen cabinets so the paint doesn't chip?
I have dark kitchen cabinets and I would like to paint them but I don't want the paint to chip off. I would like to paint the cabinets gray but I don't want the brown to show through.

Hi, Cindy!
Clean the cabinets thoroughly using TSP (tri-sodium phosphate: a degreaser). Use a good primer as a basecoat (Kilz or BullsEye), then apply the paint using a roller designed for a smooth surface. The key is making sure they have been thoroughly cleaned! Good luck with your project - I hope this helps!
Paint should not flake off a properly prepared surface. Sand, clean, prime, paint two finish coats and you should be fine.
I always use a good primer and a glossy oil based paint. I have to be able to wipe them everyday and that holds up for me. It has an odor so ventilate while painting. Rust-Oleum has a latex gloss but it's not the same to me.
I agree with the cleaning, sanding and priming of the cabinets for sure. I would get a good quality paint and apply a couple of coats. If you can remove them and use a sprayer you would get a really nice finish. Then I would probably spray a clear coat on top for extra protection. Have fun.
