Hi Darcy. A good scrubbing with dish soap, warm water and a scrub brush will do the trick. If you can't bend down, use a bristle broom instead of the scrub brush. Then use a rag in warm water to wipe off soap. Then dry with an old towel. Wait at least 2 hours to insure the stairs are dry and use a good floor polish. Done!
Re paint re varnish maybe stencil the backs
Hot water and vinegar , might take a few times .Then get a product called quick shine for hardwood floors . Apply to the wood section with a soft cloth. Give it 1-3 coats . Good luck !
Hi, Darcy!
A good cleaning with a product like Murphy's Oil Soap would definitely work! I hope this helps!
Have you tried Bona products?
Non-toxic cleaning and can be used on almost any floor. The water loosens and wipes away dirt, Sal’s Suds boosts the grime-fighting power, and vodka leaves an odorless streak-free shine. Personally, I won't buy Sal's Suds as it's expensive but I do use Dawn instead.
1 cup distilled water
1 cup vodka (get the cheapest kind you can find)
3-4 drops Sal’s Suds (dr. bronner product)
