Chalk paint is usually a pretty easy way. It requires little to no prep and gives a nice finish.

Clean it well. I typically prime desk tops since they get a lot of wear. Then paint. Chalk paint is easy to use but it needs a top coat. I like polycrylic with chalk paint.
If your old desk is wood, you may want to strip the old lacquer or other finish off, sand and clean the whole desk, then stain the wood, and seal the finish. This might take 2-3 days because of drying time, but you should end up with a high-end piece of furniture. If it is a painted desk, I like Emy’s answer. I would sand the desktop before sealing, but you can always use a desk mat or large calendar if the top is not smooth enough. Have fun redoing your desk! Jewell
