You can use it for privacy. It will let in light if it isn't dark/opaque.
Pamela, here you go for contact paper. If you do not want a permanent cover, we use plastic made for windows using moisture only and it has been up until we need it to come down then it just pulls off. Here are both methods for you:

I have the clear contact paper (it has designs on it so it still let's the light in but nobody can see in my windows) on the window on my front door. Is really easy to put on, just measure the window and cut to the size you need, spray a bit of water on the window and it sticks to it just like that. And when you want to change it or take it down it doesn't leave any marks or residue
