Hi Faye,
You will need to completely strip the table of all paint,stain,varnish to give clean original wood surface, then brush on - the way the grain goes. Let sink in and repeat until happy with results.
On my "page" here on Hometalk, There is a description of how to do a French polish (linseed oil finish) but linseed oil is a "finish" not a paint.
