Try making one out of a vinyl tablecloth (the ones with the cloth/felt lining are sturdier)...they are waterproof and should withstand weather conditions. They are also inexpensive. Cut to fit and wrap with duct tape....should last many months.

I use an entire drop cloth folded to fit the unit and then use bunny cords to hold it in place. It's not beautiful but it's not too bad. lol. Mine are window units so I don't know how it would work with a central unit. I live in New Mexico where the sun eats through plastic and the winds rip through everything else.
