if you need to stretch it to reconnect it, try using WD-40 to remove the rust. then use a metal rod in the spring fixing (so you have two hands to pull. Also have someone hold a rod in halfway along the spring incase it recoils as it will help steady it. This is maybe a job for an Upholsterer (who will have the right tools for the job!
Good luck - it won't be easy........
I have done it in the past and needed my husband to pull them with pliers and hold them while I screw them in place.
