Are you putting on top of another table or onto legs? A hardwood plywood will resist dents and scratches better than cheap fir plywood. It all depends on your needs.
Whatever you do , do not use cheap plywood, you will regret it because it is soft and will show all dents and dings.
Do you have the base already? Do you know the size and shape you want? Do you want to stain or paint? Ken is correct about the difference with types of plywood. You'll want to do some comparison shopping so you get the best quality for your money.
Unless you have a surface you are attaching the plywood to, I would advise at least 3/4" plywood . That is what we use for SubFloor, so it should be able to hold weight, like arms or plates.
If you have a base you are attaching to then a thin plywood is less expensive and could be used like a veneer. It can also be stained to look really nice.
