It depends how they are made. You may need to remove the old tread to add new bull nose wood tread, then finish. If already has a bullnose overhang may just to have refinished.

Carefully pull the carpet off one tread to see how the stair is built. If they used 2x12's, you'll need to reassess the project as it won't be as simple.
Once you remove the carpet then you'll know what you're dealing with. With our staircase we built out of 2x10s we simply stained it and finished it to match our floors. Its not fancy but we like it a lot! However, if you're staircase is built out of plywood you may not appreciate the look so much and then, in that case, you'll have to add wood to the look you want.
