I have a tendency to cram too much in a small space, so I have learned to go vertical for storage and double duty furniture like footstools that hold storage. Bins on shelves or in cubbies really helps.

I too like the tall bookcases, and you can use basket or fabric cubes to hide some items. I also like the upholstered storage cubes/ottomans for end tables and coffee table for extra storage.
Buy smaller scale furniture instead of big over-stuffed furniture that is meant for apartments and smaller spaces.
Choose a monochromatic color scheme and lighter shades will trick the eye for the room to appear larger.
