You may have grubs in your lawn and that is what they are after. You can apply products that will kill the grubs and eliminate this problem. Different products are used for different times of the year. One product you can apply in the spring, a different product in mid to late summer. Different chemicals for different stages of grub life. I have two acres of property that I had to treat for grubs this year. I had always wondered why my yard was getting dug up and had a large patch of grass that would not green up that was getting larger each year. I FINALLY did the research, treated my property, and no more animals digging up the grass! Who knew! I will treat again in the spring.

Use Nematoads in the spring and fall! Ask your garden center where to purchase them!
don't think its raccoons more skunk damage they are the ones that dig up the grubs, be careful going in and out at night you don't want to get sprayed by startling them. the grubs turn into those big brownish beatles that fly around at night. you can treat the lawn for grubs and the skunks will move on. they are getting rid of the grubs for you
Ours was skunks. Tons of Japanese beetle all over my rose bush every Summer. Those grubs are Japanese Beetle larvae . I used grub killer in the Summer after the beetles are gone, then later Fall. Had two beetles this year, so I need to do better spreading.
Go get um 😠
